Francisco de Vitoria

1486–1546

Francisco de Vitoria (c. 1486–1546) was a Spanish Dominican, born in Burgos or Vitoria. He studied and taught at the Dominican college of Saint-Jacques in Paris, where his teacher Peter Crockaert had begun lecturing on Thomas's *Summa* in place of Lombard's *Sentences*. In 1526 he won the prime chair of theology at Salamanca and held it until his death.

At Salamanca he made the *Summa* the text of the theology course, and a generation of masters (Soto, Cano, Medina and others) learned theology from him in that form. That is why he is counted the founder of the School of Salamanca. His *relectiones*, solemn lectures on disputed questions, applied Thomas's teaching on law and justice to the conquest of the Americas and to war, and are read as founding texts of international law. He published almost nothing himself; the *relectiones* were printed after his death, and his lectures survive in students' notes.
