And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, and giver of life.

Behold the eighth article, which turns upon the third person in the Trinity, that is, upon the Holy Spirit, expressing those things which specially pertain to the Holy Spirit. And note that this circumlocution "Holy Spirit" is appropriated to the third person in the Trinity. He is called Holy, moreover, not only because he sanctifies by remitting sins, but because grace is increased through him.

Lord.

This is said against Arius, who called the Holy Spirit a creature of a creature.

And giver of life.

This is said against Pelagius, who said that man acts well without the grace of God. Against whom it is said, "and giver of life," because the Holy Spirit both gives life by remitting sins, and also by conferring greater things.

Caput XXI: Qui ex Patre Filioque procedit.

Caput XXII: Qui cum Patre et Filio simul adoratur et conglorificatur.
