Martín de Azpilcueta
1492–1586
Martín de Azpilcueta (1492–1586), called Doctor Navarrus, was born in Barásoain in Navarre and became an Augustinian canon regular of Roncesvalles. He taught canon law at Toulouse and Cahors, held the prime chair of canon law at Salamanca, and then taught for many years at Coimbra. In old age he went to Rome to defend Archbishop Bartolomé Carranza before the Inquisition, and he died there in 1586.
Azpilcueta was the great canonist of the Salamanca school. His *Manual de confesores* was among the most used handbooks of moral theology of its century. His commentaries on usury and exchange explained the value of money by its scarcity, an early statement of what economists later called the quantity theory of money.
