Luis de León
1527–1591
Luis de León (1527–1591) was a Spanish Augustinian friar, born in Belmonte. He studied at Salamanca and held chairs of theology and of Scripture there. Denounced for his views on the Vulgate and for translating the Song of Songs into Spanish, he spent nearly five years in the prisons of the Inquisition at Valladolid (1572–1576) before he was acquitted and returned to his chair.
He is best known as a poet and as a master of Spanish prose, above all in *De los nombres de Cristo*. He was also a scholastic theologian and exegete: he lectured on grace, faith and the *Summa*, wrote Latin commentaries on Scripture, and prepared the first edition of the works of Teresa of Ávila (1588). At Salamanca he stood with the Augustinians and the Hebraists in the disputes over Scripture that divided the faculty.
