Gregorio de Valencia

1549–1603

Gregorio de Valencia (1549–1603) was born in Medina del Campo, studied at Salamanca, and entered the Society of Jesus in 1565. He spent more than twenty years teaching theology in Germany, at Dillingen and above all at Ingolstadt, and was called to Rome late in life. He died at Naples in 1603.

His *Commentaria theologica*, four volumes following the order of Thomas's *Summa*, brought the Salamanca method to the German universities and were widely used there. In the controversy *de auxiliis* he was one of the principal defenders of Molina's account of grace and free will before the papal commission in Rome.
