Francisco Zumel

1540–1607

Francisco Zumel (1540–1607) was a Spanish friar of the Order of Mercy (the Mercedarians), born in Palencia. He taught at Salamanca for most of his life, held its chair of moral philosophy and later a chair of theology, and served as master general of his order.

Zumel wrote commentaries on the *Prima Pars* of the *Summa* and on Aristotle. He took part in the controversy *de auxiliis* on grace and free will, writing against Molina, and represents the Mercedarian voice at Salamanca: Thomist in method, but independent of the Dominican school on several disputed points. Zurbarán painted him in the series of Mercedarian portraits made for the order's house in Seville.
