Francisco de Toledo

1532–1596

Francisco de Toledo (1532–1596), known in Latin as Toletus, was born in Córdoba and studied theology at Salamanca under Domingo de Soto. He taught there before entering the Society of Jesus in 1558. In Rome he taught philosophy and theology at the Roman College, served several popes as preacher and theologian, and in 1593 became the first Jesuit cardinal.

His commentaries on Aristotle's logic, *Physics* and *De anima* were standard textbooks in Jesuit colleges. His lectures on Thomas's *Summa* were published only in the nineteenth century. His manual for confessors, his commentaries on John and Romans, and his work on the revised Vulgate made him one of the bridges between the Salamanca masters and the Jesuit theology of the following generation.
