Francis of Meyronnes
1285–1328
Francis of Meyronnes (c. 1285–c. 1328) was a Franciscan from Provence who studied at Paris, probably under Scotus. He lectured on the *Sentences* there and became a master of theology at Paris in 1323. He was close to Robert of Naples and died in Italy around 1328.
His commentary on the first book of the *Sentences*, known as the *Conflatus*, was one of the most read Scotist works of the later Middle Ages. He developed Scotus's formal distinction and the doctrine of formalities so far that later writers called him *magister abstractionum*, the master of abstractions. He also wrote sermons, a commentary on Augustine, and treatises on papal and royal power.
