Diego de Covarrubias y Leyva

1512–1577

Diego de Covarrubias y Leyva (1512–1577) was born in Toledo and studied canon law at Salamanca under Azpilcueta, later teaching there himself. He became a judge, bishop of Ciudad Rodrigo, a Spanish delegate at the Council of Trent, bishop of Segovia, and in 1572 president of the Council of Castile. He died in 1577, having just been named bishop of Cuenca.

His collected works in canon and civil law (the *Relectiones*, the *Variae resolutiones* and the *Practicae quaestiones*) were standard authorities in European law for two centuries. On questions of conquest, war, contracts and the just price he carried the Salamanca theologians' arguments into the law faculty and the courts.

None of his works is in the library yet.
