Pedro Hurtado de Mendoza

1578–1641

Jesuit

Pedro Hurtado de Mendoza (1578–1641) was born at Balmaseda in Biscay and entered the Society of Jesus at Salamanca in 1595. He taught philosophy and theology at Valladolid and later held a chair at the University of Salamanca. He died at Madrid in 1641. He is not the conquistador of the same name.

His *Disputationes a Summulis ad Metaphysicam* (Valladolid, 1615), reissued as *Universa philosophia* (Lyon, 1624), is the earliest of the one-volume philosophy courses, the *cursus*, that became the standard scholastic textbook for the next century and a half. In it Hurtado moved away from the realism of Suárez and Vázquez toward a conceptualist account of universals and beings of reason, and his pupils Rodrigo de Arriaga and Francisco de Oviedo carried that turn further. His theology followed: *De fide*, *De spe et charitate* (Salamanca, 1631) and *De Deo homine*, on the Incarnation (Antwerp, 1634).
