Diego Ruiz de Montoya

1562–1632

Jesuit

Diego Ruiz de Montoya (1562–1632) was born at Seville and entered the Society of Jesus in 1572. He taught philosophy at Granada and moral theology at Baeza, then theology for some twenty years at Córdoba and Seville, and was for a time rector of the college of Córdoba. He spent his last years writing, and died at Seville in 1632.

His commentaries on the *Prima Pars* came out in quick succession: *De Trinitate* (Lyon, 1625), his principal work, then *De praedestinatione* (1628), *De scientia, ideis, veritate ac vita Dei* (Paris, 1629), *De voluntate Dei* (1630) and *De providentia* (1631). Kleutgen and Menéndez Pelayo admired them for joining positive theology, the reading of the Fathers and councils, to scholastic argument more closely than his predecessors had. His two volumes *De auxiliis* stayed in manuscript.
